AS THE PENDULUM SWINGS BACK TOWARDS TESTING, COLLEGES ARE LOOKING TO EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS, SUCH AS ADVANCED PLACEMENT AND REGENTS EXAMS, TO REINFORCE HIGH SCHOOL GRADES.
Since the start of the pandemic, the biggest news story over the past few years as it relates to high school students has been the shift by colleges to permit students to apply on a test optional basis, i.e., without submitting test scores. It was a quick and immediate shift from traditional college admissions. Almost all colleges across the country (with only few exceptions) permitted students to apply without submitting any test score, including ACT, SAT or AP scores.
That story is starting to change...

We learned earlier today that the New York State Education Department is cancelling the Regents exam in U.S. History.
June 2022 marks the return of the New York State Regents Exams and there will be a new U.S. History exam.
The New York State Education Department circulated a memorandum to schools across the State announcing that Regents Exams will be administered this coming June. Since the start of the pandemic, Regents Exams in New York have been put on hold. With the exception of a few federally-mandated exams that were optional last year, most New York high school students have not sat for a Regents Exam since June 2019. Regents Exams are end-of-year assessments that are given in the following subject areas: Earth Science, Living Environment/Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Global History, U.S. History and English. Exam scores appear on a student’s high school transcript and many school districts count the score as part of a student’s overall average in the course.
This year, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, New York State is administering Regents Exams in only four academic subjects - - Earth Science, Living Environment (Biology), Algebra 1 and English Language Arts.
Traditionally, in past years, the grade received on a Regents Exam counted towards a certain percentage of the final grade in the course. In addition, the grade received on the Regents Exam appeared on the student’s high school transcript. This year, each school district is afforded the flexibility as to how scores on these exams will be treated and whether to permit an “E” or “exempt” on the student’s transcript in place of the grade on the exam.
With many colleges and universities making standardized tests like the SAT and ACT optional for admissions, Advance Placement tests rise in importance and should be adjusted for by the next wave of college applicants
